Last year, Hollywood came knocking in the remote eastern Romanian village of Zece Prajini, a hop, skip, and a jump from the former Soviet republic of Moldova. With its muddy streets, horse-drawn carts, and modest houses, the place, even according to villagers, is “the end of the earth.” What attracted movie moguls to Zece Prajini? Borat needed a cover of the biker anthem “Born to be Wild,” and they had a very particular group in mind. That group was Fanfare Ciocãrlia, the speed-loving masters of Romany brass music’s curlicue melodies and exhilarating rhythms, who were sought out for the soundtrack of last year’s quirky hit, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.” And while it may seem odd to have rural Romanian gypsies playing Steppenwolf behind the antics of a pseudo-Kazakh, it’s just par for the course for the eleven-member, multi-generational Fanfare Ciocãrlia, whose history and inspirations span the globe. This history comes to life on Queens and Kings (Asphalt Tango Records), an album that draws together the reigning royalty of Europe’s Roma musicians and pays touching tribute to Ioan Ivancea, Ciocarlia’s late bandleader.

So excited announce another round of amazing touring acts coming thru Pittsburgh that i’ll be presenting or opening for.  I am in the throws of collaborations with VIA-PGH, El Gallo and Round Corner Cantina, The Andy Warhol Museum, and bringing in acts like Boogat from Montreal, Isa GT from Colombia, RAYA BRASS BAND New York,  DJ ORION from Austin, and Tinariwen Mali.  Yeah exciting stuff. I’m also djin Holi Fest for C.R.Y. pittsburgh and the gala party for SilkScreen Film Fest.  But most important and the craziest of all is my regular night at BRILLOBOX every FIRST FRIDAY and THIRD SATURDAY (except in march it’s 4th sat).

Isa GT is a Colombian producer and DJ working out of East London’s electronic music scene. Drawing influences from Cumbia, house, B-more club, Champeta, Baile funk, Kuduro – and everything in between – she has become a go-to in London for contemporary Latin music.

She has done guest vocals and co-production with Toy Selectah, Joao Brasil, Dutch Rhythm Combo, Crookers, and In Flagranti to name a few, and has toured with M.I.A. on festivals.

She started her own label- Etoro.as – to support a new generation of Latin sounds.

Check out her monthly show on Pulse Radio.

LONESOME LEASH
w/ Local support TBA

Lonesome Leash (aka Walt McClements, a touring member and collaborator of Dark Dark Dark, and also a member of punk orchestra Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship? and New Orleans’ Panorama Jazz Band) is releasing his debut album, I am No Captain, on January 1. It’s a freaky, folky album that should appeal to people who like their Decemberists/Mountain Goats cut with a little Gypsy flavor. He recently revealed the first single, “Ghosts,” and we’ve now got another album cut for you, the appropriately titled “Feeding Frenzy,” which is making its premiere in this post. You can stream both of those below.
