Brasstober moves into November

Pandemic’s 9 year anniversary party is quickly approaching and i’m excited to announce my good friend Dj Joro Boro (former resident dj of NYC’s http://www.mehanata.com, No Man’s Land, and Balkan de Janeiro) will joining the festivities on Dec 5th. Prepare yourselves for celebration of 9 Years of Drinking Dancing Stomping and Yelling at The Brillobox. Its been a crazy run and i’m grateful to still be at it.

In the meantime we have a few other parties happening in November with http://rayabrassband.com (a balkan brass 5 piece from NYC).

About Raya…

Since 2008 Raya Brass Band has thrilled audiences with its energetic brand of soul shaking, border defying dance music. Given the way these five musicians electrify clubs, festivals, underground parties, and even subway cars with their riotous performances, it’s no wonder that they’re often mistaken for a band twice the size. The members of the band all bring their unique voices to the group, creating a sound informed as much by their love for the fierce and seductive music of the Balkans as it is by New Orleans brass bands, punk rock, out jazz, and a host of other international sounds. When they put it all together, this hard working band gets straight to the point, dancing, sweating, and shouting alongside its audience.

We also have a Chalga Party in the works featuring Pittsburgh Track Authority’s Preslav also known as dj Shtangata. If you haven’t experienced a chalga party you don’t know what you are missing. This will be the 4th Chalga Party and all have been over the top. Chalga while extremely cheesy at times can also be super fun and kinda sleazy to dance to. Never have Clarinets and keytars been so cool.  But there is more than Chalga to enjoy. We play Manele, Pop Folk, Turbo Folk, Electro Shaabi, Bhangra and more.

and here is a bhangra track or two for ya.

Music Night On Jupiter and Pandemic are bringing PitchBlak Brass Band back to Pittsburgh!

With special guests Beauty Slap, and DJ sets by Pandemic.

The debut of PitchBlak Brass Band in Pittsburgh last May was so much hot, sweaty fun, we had to do it again. Only in a much larger room! If you were with us, you know why – the place was packed full and the whole building was bouncing. We are going to use the same recipe for success – Pandemic, local brass and PitchBlak – but with a lot more room to move. And you will move. Ask anyone who was with us last time. It may be physically impossible to stand still when PitchBlak is performing.

More about the band:

PitchBlak Brass Band is a Brooklyn-based 10-piece band whose style and sound represents hip-hop from the 1980s to present day. A collective of young musicians, composers and artists, PitchBlak embodies the contemporary and vibrant undercurrents of New York City. PitchBlak’s members have incredibly diverse musical backgrounds, allowing them to infuse hip-hop driven music with anything under the sun.

PitchBlak has performed at such prestigious venues as The Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Bowl, Le Poisson Rouge, 92YTribeca, Southpaw, The Shrine, Toronto’s NXNE Music Festival, Savannah Stopover Festival, Vermont’s legendary Nectar’s, Albany’s Red Square, and took home first prize at the 1st Annual Bob Stewart Tuba Competition. In addition to performing live, PitchBlak trains and mentors young musicians in community outreach programs and classrooms throughout the country.

PitchBlak released its debut album, You See Us, in fall 2013.

Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door (cash only at the door).

No Mames returns for a special Day of the Dead edition featuring DC-based producer and DJ Gustavo Naranjo, AKA G-Flux, for a night of hooliganism alongside locals Pandemic Pete and DJ Edgar Um.

G-FLUX
Gustavo Naranjo is a Mexican producer and DJ raised in Washington DC. He has collaborated with several local and international artists including Afrodita and Chet Samuel. His musical productions have been published by Universal Studios, and has been used commercially such as by Law and Order: LA, Nintendo, McDonald’s, MTV, and Jimmy Choo. He often collaborates with artists to bring other media into the musical experience.

PANDEMIC PETE
Pandemic is hybrid of traditional folk music and contemporary dance music from around the world. Dj sets are borderless, combining cutting edge dance music from remote regions of the world with traditional folk music reenergizing cultural identities. Consider Pandemic the digital crate diggers for underground glitchy ethnic bass music, but it doesn’t end there. Pandemic explores traditional folkloric music and recontextualizes it by the juxtaposition with modern dance music and pop music from other countries.

EDGAR UM
Edgar Um Bucholtz is a DJ, multi-media artist, event producer and improvising local musician. He is the co-founder and co-resident DJ (with Aaron Clark) of Honcho, a monthly after hours disco, house music and techno music rager for queers and friends at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh. Since its inception in 2010, he has served as a general advisor and music curator for the internationally-acclaimed annual VIA Music & New Media Festival in Pittsburgh that often stops in at the Cantina.

Adventure has never been a task for VBC. A Caribbean soul and a California heart have sustained over a decade of ceaseless romp-downs and raucous times for L.A.’s vallenato veteranos, inciting 10s of 1000s of men, women, children, and even some wild animals, to boogie to the Colombian coastal beat. From the debaucherous streets of: Austin’s SXSW, Germany’s WorldCupTour ’06, L.A.’s SunsetJunctionStreetFair; to the cultural pinnacles of: Chicago’s SummerDanceSeries, New York’s CentralParkSummerstage, L.A.s’ GrandPerformances & Levitt Pavilion, London’s HammersmithApollo; colossal concerts: L.A. Sports Arena CumbiaFest, GlastonburyMusicFestival & Bestival UK, FujiRockFestival & AsagiriJam Japan; clubs and hubs: N.Y.’s SOBs, L.A.’s HOBs, backyard BBQs, VeryBeCareful has tamed the beasts within or unleashed the ones without, helping to popularize the beauty of the 1950s-1970s sound of Colombian vallenato and cumbia.

THEN JUNE 26 CHICHA LIBRE RSVP FACEBOOK

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf music and psychedelic pop inspired by Peruvian music from Lima and the Amazon. The Brooklyn-based band mixes up covers of forgotten Chicha classics with French-tinged originals, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by Satie and Wagner.

Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor favored by the Incas in pre-colombian days. Chicha is also the name of Peru’s particular brand of cumbia made popular in the late 60’s by bands such as Los Destellos, Manzanita, Los Mirlos and Juaneco y su Combo.

Chicha was loosely inspired by Colombian accordion-driven cumbias but incorporated the distinctive pentatonic scales of Andean melodies, some Cuban son, and the psychedelic sounds of surf guitars, farfisa organs and moog synthesizers. Peruvian chicha bands were playing an oddly post-modern combination of western psychedelia, Cuban and Colombian rhythms, national melodies and idiosyncratic inventions which were close in spirit to both the Congolese rumba of Franco and the pop syncretism of Os Mutantes.

It’s a freaky, folky album that should appeal to people who like their Decemberists/Mountain Goats cut with a little Gypsy flavor. He recently revealed the first single, “Ghosts,” and we’ve now got another album cut for you, the appropriately titled “Feeding Frenzy,” which is making its premiere in this post. Matryoshka, music & printed matter: PANDEMIC turns 8

DECEMBER 6, 5 P.M. – 2 A.M.

Why you should go: Where can you paint your own Russian nesting doll, bid on local art and dance your heart out all on one street? Pandemic, one of Pittsburgh’s top dance parties, is marking eight years of music, sweat and vodka with a triple-header birthday bash on Friday, December 6th.

Spearheaded by Pittsburgh-based DJ, musician and event producer Pete Spynda, Pandemic turns the energy up a notch on its monthly dance party with celebration events spanning three East End venues. Coinciding with the holiday edition of Unblurred, the popular first Friday gallery crawl along the Penn Avenue arts district, Pandemic is hosting a benefit art auction, matryoshka doll painting activities and an anniversary dance party.

Kick off Friday’s festivities at Most Wanted Fine Art, where Pandemic is presenting an exhibition and benefit auction featuring Russian nesting dolls (matryoshka) and limited-edition posters. Featured will be nesting dolls painted by 20-plus local artists, including Mike Budai, Thommy Conroy, Gabe Felice, Jen Cooney, Masha Mousebones Vereshenko, Ashley Brickman, Jennifer J Howison and more. Dolls will be sold during a silent auction from 5 to 9 p.m.

Also on display and for sale for $5 to $10 will be eye-catching archival posters from Pandemic’s eight-year legacy in the Burgh. The free event will also feature music by University of Pittsburgh’s Carpathian Ensemble. Proceeds will support the European Roma Rights Centre, based in Budapest. Next pop into nearby Assemble to paint your own matryoshka using materials provided by the community-based art and tech space.

When you’re ready to move, head further down Penn Ave. to Brillobox for the night’s culminating dance party, as Pandemic ushers in the next eight years of electric music from around the planet. Expect five hours (9 p.m. to 2 a.m.) of Pandemic’s signature mix of everything from gypsy brass and reggaeton, to chalga and Turkish psych, along with special guests DJ Juan Diego VII and the Mayday Marching Band.

You might catch them wailing mid-span on the Brooklyn Bridge under a full moon. Or making partiers on a Bushwick rooftop dance so hard that the roof bounces. Raya Brass Band bursts with a frenetic joie de vivre that powers the high-energy party. Digging into black-market compilations, Eastern European carnival traditions and their own eclectic musical pasts (New Orleans brass, punk, out jazz), Raya Brass Band has the chops to match their irrational exuberance.

On a side note…. I’m also putting together a festival of Brass… Similar to the likes of this video… Indie GoGo campaign about to be dropped on ya.  Feel free to kick in a few shekels.
