Colombian guitarist and composer Eblis Alvarez has been an intricate part of the new generation of Colombian musicians for the past ten years. He is also a member of Frente Cumbiero, Los Pirañas and Ondatropica.
Eblis started Meridian Brothers back in 1998 as a vehicle for his own experimental music. He ended up studying composition and electronic music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, but after returning to Bogota, took to exploring all manners of latin popular music – cumbia, salsa, boogaloo etc… Meridian Brothers started applying itself to tropical rhythms, mixing Eblis’ love of dance rhythms and his interest in more formal music.
On Meridian’s first few albums, Eblis played all the instruments, but over the years, the group has evolved into a live five-piece band focused on re-interpreting all manners of Latin Tropical styles, with a strong psychedelic and experimental sensibility. Live, the group uses sampling techniques, elaborate effect processing, and Eblis’ quirky and theatrical vocals that channel imaginary characters with both pathos and humor.
Meridian Brothers’ past two albums are available on Soundway records.
Meridian Brothers include Maria Valencia (saxophone, clarinet, percussion and synthesizers), Damian Ponce (Percussion), Cesar Quevedo (bass) and Alejandro Forero (electronics and synthesizers).
